Growing Confidence Through Farming: Denbighshire Farm Forward Programme

The Denbighshire Farm Forward Programme has been a valuable initiative supporting individuals from across the county to reconnect with nature, develop practical skills, and build confidence through meaningful activity on the farm.

Over the course of the programme, participants from Rhyl and South Denbighshire have attended weekly sessions, engaging positively with the opportunities provided. The programme has created a welcoming and supportive environment where individuals can develop routine, learn new skills, and improve their wellbeing through hands-on farm activities.

Learning Through Real Farm Life

Participants have been fully involved in the day-to-day running of the farm. Each week they have taken part in practical tasks that help them gain experience while contributing to the care of the farm environment.

Activities have included:

  • Feeding and caring for the animals
  • Checking animal welfare and wellbeing
  • Supporting with general farm maintenance
  • Taking part in routine agricultural tasks

These activities help participants develop responsibility, teamwork, and confidence, while also providing the benefits of spending time outdoors and working with animals. Engagement from the cohort has been excellent, with participants attending regularly and approaching the sessions with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

A Supportive Environment

The programme has supported individuals with a range of personal circumstances, including people experiencing challenges such as low confidence, poor mental health, additional learning needs, or housing instability.

The farm environment has provided a safe and supportive space where participants can:

  • Build routine and structure in their week
  • Improve social interaction and communication skills
  • Develop confidence through practical achievement
  • Experience the therapeutic benefits of working with animals and nature

For some participants, simply having a consistent place to attend each week and being part of a supportive group has made a significant difference to their wellbeing.

In certain situations, participants have also been provided with additional support such as one-to-one sessions, guidance on accessing wider services, and practical wellbeing support, ensuring individuals feel valued and supported throughout their journey on the programme.

Positive Outcomes

Throughout the programme, we have seen a number of positive outcomes emerging. Participants have shown improvements in:

  • Confidence and self-belief
  • Engagement in group activities
  • Practical and transferable skills
  • Motivation to move forward with personal goals

Some participants have also begun engaging with additional support services, training opportunities, or accommodation support, demonstrating progress toward greater stability and independence.

Preparing for the Next Steps

As the programme comes to a close, the focus is on supporting participants as they move forward.

A resource pack has been developed to provide participants with information about local services, training opportunities, volunteering options, and employment pathways. This resource is designed to help individuals understand what support is available and where they can turn for further guidance.

In addition, Level 2 Health and Safety training has been offered to all cohorts, giving participants the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification that may support future employment or volunteering opportunities.

Participants will also be supported as they transition back to Working Denbighshire, ensuring they continue to receive guidance and access to opportunities following the completion of the programme.

The Value of Farming for Wellbeing

The Denbighshire Farm Forward Programme has demonstrated how farming, nature, and community support can play an important role in improving wellbeing and confidence.

By combining practical activity, supportive relationships, and a welcoming environment, the programme has helped participants reconnect with their strengths, develop new skills, and begin to look ahead to future opportunities.

We are proud of the progress participants have made and look forward to seeing them continue their journeys beyond the programme. 🌱
